Some pieces in the shop are here because they work beautifully. A few are here because they also have something to say. The Majan cups are one of those.
A name older than the country
Long before the UAE had its name, the land here was known in ancient texts as Magan, or Majan. It was famous for one thing above all: copper. The Al Majan Collection, designed by SF for Collation Formation Curation, takes that history and puts it in your hand, one cup of gahwa at a time.
From the mountains to the sea
Copper and diorite mining in the UAE goes back more than 4,000 years. In the rugged Hajar Mountains, copper ore was dug out, smelted in clay furnaces and poured into moulds to make ingots, tools and everyday objects.
Then came the journey. Camel caravans carried the metal down to the coast, where it was loaded onto boats bound for Mesopotamia. Getting there meant reading coastal waters and open sea with real skill, and it turned this corner of Arabia into one of the ancient world's important trading partners. Mining is still part of the country's economy today, so the story isn't only a historical one.
What the cups bring to the table
The set is made for the moment that matters most in an Emirati home: pouring gahwa for guests. Six small cups, each one carrying the collection's story, presented in a box that makes it an easy gift for someone who already has everything.
- Majan Gahwa Cups, set of 6: the classic finjan-style cups for Arabic coffee.
- Majan Collection cups and saucers, set of 6: the same story, in a cup-and-saucer set. A limited edition.
Why we stock it
We look for objects that are good to use every day and still have a reason to exist beyond that. These cups do both. They're a quiet reminder that the coffee ritual and the craft behind it have deep roots right here, and they make a gift that means something to the person opening it.
